Wallie’s Recovery Journey: Life After Complex Soft-Tissue Surgery

Meet My Baby Boy Wallie

This is Wallie, my beloved canine companion; he is 15 years old, yet he believes he is only 10. He enjoys playing and jumping, and he also loves to spend time on the porch.
Wallie is more than just ‘my dog.’ He is family, embodying personality, attitude, drama, loyalty, and an abundance of adorable charm all within his furry frame.
This year, he has faced some health challenges; like me, he is aging. Nevertheless, despite his age and health concerns, Wallie retains the energy and spirit of a much younger dog. His playful antics and affectionate nature bring immense joy and happiness to my life. As he continues to grow older, I treasure every moment spent with him and feel thankful for the unconditional love he offers me.
In 2018, he underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his front right paw. This year, a lump appeared on the same paw, prompting me to consult his veterinarian. The veterinarian recommended that I take Wallie to a board-certified veterinary surgeon for the necessary operation. I was heartbroken by this information, yet I understood that I must do everything possible to secure Wallie’s health and well-being.

Why We Chose a Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon?

When it comes to intricate or advanced soft-tissue surgery, the importance of training cannot be overstated. A board-certified veterinary surgeon has undergone years of specialized training in surgical techniques, anesthesia safety, and post-operative recovery planning.
In layman’s terms: you are not merely consulting a generalist—you’re consulting the specialist to whom other veterinarians refer their cases. This is precisely who Dr. Omar González is. During the initial consultation, he thoroughly explained the situation with Wallie, the necessary actions to be taken, and the anticipated surgical plan. He exhibited patience, composure, and exceptional clarity.
This clarity significantly alleviated my fears regarding the process. I felt reassured knowing that Wallie was under the care of a highly trained professional like Dr. González. His expertise and experience were apparent in the meticulous way he detailed the surgical procedure and addressed all of my inquiries.
I was confident that he would deliver the highest standard of care for Wallie, and I had complete trust in his capabilities. Dr. González’s composed demeanor and effective communication transformed a challenging situation into a more manageable experience for me as a pet owner. I am thankful for his expertise and compassionate approach to veterinary medicine.

Wallie's Surgery Day

Wallie’s operation took place on October 20, 2025 at Veterinary Specialty Center, 7730 N Wickham Rd Suite 108, Melbourne, Florida. The day of the surgery was nerve-wracking, but when I finally got the call that Wallie had made it through successfully, I felt a wave of relief wash over me.
The team kept me updated during the day. They treated Wallie like he was theirs. And honestly—that matters. You can feel the difference between a clinic that “treats animals” and a specialty center that understands that this is your heart on a table. Wallie’s resilience and strength never fail to amaze me, and I am so grateful to have him by my side, bringing light and love into my life every day.
I knew that the road to recovery would be long and challenging, but I was willing to do whatever it took to ensure Wallie’s health and happiness. As we navigated through the post-surgery care and rehabilitation process together, I was constantly amazed by Wallie’s positive attitude and determination.
His unwavering spirit inspired me to be strong for him, and I knew that with his strength and my love, we would overcome any obstacles that came our way. Wallie truly is a blessing in my life, and I am forever grateful for his presence.

Wallie's First 24 Hours After Surgery

Recovery following a significant procedure is essential. The post-operative guidelines provided by the Veterinary Specialty Center were crucial. This instilled confidence in me as I approached the first night.
Wallie appeared drowsy, slightly unsteady, and sought comfort. I created a serene “recovery corner” for him at home—featuring soft bedding, minimal movement, and easy access to water. I adhered strictly to the medication schedule, vigilantly observing his incision for any indications of infection.
Wallie seemed to be resting peacefully in his recovery corner, and I felt reassured knowing I possessed all the necessary information to care for him appropriately. As the night progressed, his drowsiness began to diminish, and he started to exhibit more signs of recovery. I was confident that with time, patience, and diligent adherence to the post-operative instructions, Wallie would soon return to his usual self.

Wallie's Day by Day Improvement

The journey has been quite challenging; however, witnessing Wallie’s gradual recovery brings me immense hope and gratitude. I am deeply appreciative of the expertise and care offered by Dr. González, along with the steadfast support from my family and friends throughout this trying period.
I eagerly anticipate the day when Wallie will be completely healed and able to partake in his beloved activities once more. I am confident that with ongoing commitment and affection, we will overcome this together.

The Difference the Veterinary Specialty Center Made!

Wallie’s procedure was far from “simple.” It necessitated a high level of expertise in intricate soft-tissue surgery. I sought a professional who specializes in this field rather than someone who performs it sporadically.
They took their time with me, addressing every question I posed (and I had many). They recognized that my concerns extended beyond just a dog; I was genuinely worried about Wallie. The recovery phase is often where many pet owners feel inundated. This team ensured that I was fully informed on how to care for him. I am truly thankful. Sincerely thankful.
Wallie Today following his surgery, Wallie is currently resting and healing, and — in typical Wallie style — he is demanding attention as if nothing has occurred. Although he is still under certain restrictions, the sparkle has returned to his eyes. He is comfortable, safe, and on the path to recovery. I am immensely grateful. The veterinary hospital team truly exceeded expectations for both Wallie and myself.
They not only delivered outstanding medical care but also provided emotional support during this challenging period. I can now envision a bright future for Wallie, thanks to their skill and kindness. I will forever be thankful for all they did for us during this trying time.

🐾 Major Medical Update: Wallie’s Diagnosis & Treatment Plan

Wallie is now fighting on two major medical fronts. He has been officially diagnosed with Cushing’s disease (hyperadrenocorticism) and Stage Type 2 cancer on the paw that was previously operated.

These two diagnoses together mean Wallie’s body is under extreme internal stress. Cushing’s disease causes the body to produce excessive cortisol, which suppresses his immune system, delays healing, and weakens his ability to fight disease. Combined with cancer, this makes his treatment more complex and urgent.

💊 Cushing’s Disease Treatment

Wallie has officially started treatment for Cushing’s disease with:

  • Vetoryl – 30mg daily

This medication works by reducing the excessive cortisol being produced by his adrenal glands. This is a lifelong medication that requires:

  • Ongoing bloodwork

  • Hormone level monitoring

  • Internal medicine oversight

This medication is essential for stabilizing Wallie so his body can withstand cancer treatments safely.

🎗️ Oncology Care & Cancer Treatment Plan (Updated)

Wallie is now under the direct care of board-certified veterinary oncologist Dr. Erin Roof from Animal Cancer Care Clinic, located in Melbourne, Florida.

Planned Cancer Treatment

Wallie will be receiving:

  • Two sessions of Electrochemotherapy

Electrochemotherapy is a highly targeted cancer treatment that delivers chemotherapy directly into tumor cells using controlled electrical pulses. This allows:

  • Maximum tumor destruction

  • Less systemic toxicity

  • Reduced damage to surrounding healthy tissue

This advanced treatment gives Wallie the best possible chance while minimizing unnecessary suffering.

📅 December 4th Electrochemotherapy & Tumor Body Mapping

On December 4th, Wallie successfully completed his first electrochemotherapy session with Dr. Erin Roof at Animal Cancer Care Clinic in Melbourne, Florida. During that same visit, Dr. Roof also performed a full Tumor Body Mapping.

🩺 Tumor Body Mapping Results

  • Several additional masses were located

  • Each mass was carefully examined and tested

  • No immediate cancer concern was found

  • All areas must now be closely monitored

Although finding multiple masses is frightening, Dr. Roof expressed no immediate concern at this time, emphasizing that careful monitoring is the safest and most appropriate next step.

Final Thoughts

💛 Final Thoughts

I am sharing Wallie’s story now for three deeply important reasons:

1. Hope

When your pet requires intricate surgery, cancer treatment, and lifelong medical care, it can feel overwhelming and terrifying. I understand that fear deeply. Yet even in the darkest moments, hope still exists. Wallie has already survived surgery, begun cancer treatment, and started managing a lifelong endocrine disease. Recovery is not always linear—but progress is possible. Strength can return. Love continues to lead the way forward.

2. Gratitude for the Hands That Saved Him

I extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Omar González and the entire team at Veterinary Specialty Center
📍 7730 N Wickham Rd Suite 108, Melbourne, FL 32940
📞 (321) 610-1999

Their exceptional surgical care gave Wallie a fighting chance when everything felt uncertain. Their compassion toward both Wallie and me during one of the most terrifying moments of my life will never be forgotten.

Today, I am also profoundly grateful for Dr. Erin Roof of Animal Cancer Care Clinic, who is now leading Wallie’s cancer treatment. Under her care, Wallie has already completed his first electrochemotherapy session on December 4th, along with a full tumor body mapping. While several masses were found, each was carefully examined and tested, and at this time, no additional cancer concern was detected—only close monitoring is required.

Wallie is also now being treated daily for Cushing’s disease with Vetoryl 30mg, a lifelong medication that is helping stabilize his body so he can continue his fight against cancer.

3. Faith in the Fight

Wallie is now facing:

  • A lifelong endocrine disease

  • Active cancer treatment

  • Ongoing oncology monitoring

  • And a second upcoming electrochemotherapy session

Yet despite everything, he is still here. He still wags his tail. He still seeks comfort. He still fights.

Wallie is gaining strength each day, and this update now carries even more meaning than ever before. I am eternally thankful for every doctor, every technician, every supporter, every prayer, and every shared message of love. Their commitment to Wallie’s health and happiness has been nothing short of extraordinary.

As Wallie continues this long medical journey, I am constantly reminded of the power of hope, the importance of never giving up, and the deep, unbreakable bond between humans and their cherished pets.

To everyone who has stood by us through surgery, cancer, and now Cushing’s disease — thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Wallie is still fighting.
And so am I — for him. 🐾💙
