Like many others struggling with mental health issues i had suffer from childhood trauma. I went through abuse as a child due to my parents' heavy drinking. Remembering the violence I endured brings up a lot of emotions. The scars from those experiences will always be a part of me.

With the help of my therapist, I've been able to ease some of the pain and I'm working on forgiving. It's been a tough journey after years of fear, but I'm committed to healing and finding happiness within myself. What Is a Traumatic Event? A traumatic event is a frightening, dangerous, or violent event that poses a threat to a child’s life or bodily integrity. Witnessing a traumatic event that threatens life or physical security of a loved one can also be traumatic. This is particularly important for young children as their sense of safety depends on the perceived safety of their attachment figures.

Treating the Effects of Childhood Trauma. An estimated 46% of children experience trauma at some point in their young lives.1 While kids are resilient, they're not made of stone. Adults often say things like, "They were so young when that happened, they won't even remember it as an adult," but childhood trauma can have a lifelong effect. That's not to say that a child will be emotionally scarred forever if they endure a horrific experience. But it's important to recognize when a child may need professional help for dealing with their trauma. Early intervention can also prevent the ongoing effects of the trauma into adulthood.
