What Is a Traumatic Event? A traumatic event is a frightening, dangerous, or violent event that poses a threat to a child’s life or bodily integrity. Witnessing a traumatic event that threatens life or physical security of a loved one can also be traumatic. This is particularly important for young children as their sense of safety depends on the perceived safety of their attachment figures.

Treating the Effects of Childhood Trauma. An estimated 46% of children experience trauma at some point in their young lives.1 While kids are resilient, they're not made of stone. But it's important to recognize when a child may need professional help for dealing with their trauma. Early intervention can also prevent the ongoing effects of the trauma into adulthood.
